BET Hip Hop Awards 2010: the Men Outshine the Ladies

Saturday night was 5th annual BET Hip Hop Awards. Very much akin to MTV’s Video Music Awards, the Hip Hop Awards celebrate the year’s best in performers, music videos, producers, albums, etc in the hip hop wordl. Also very much like the VMAs, the dress code is more relaxed then other awards shows (like, say, the Oscars) and allows for more personality to be displayed by the musicians.

With that said, I was a little disappointed by the ensemble choices of the majority of the female attendees and thought it was definitely the men that stepped it up style-wise. These are a few of my favorite looks from the night:

Diggy Simmons – son of one of the most influential hip hop stars of our time, Rev Run, this 15-year old is definitely trying to make a name for himself in the worlds of music and fashion. Signed to Atlantic Records earlier this year and launching his own sneaker line, Chivalrous Culture, Diggy showed off his effortlessly cool look on the “blue carpet”. Donning the always-classic combination of black and white, Simmons looked more put together than a lot of people much older than him ever do.

Roscoe Dash – Dash displayed a fantastic balance of a little bit of prep and a little bit of hip hop to make an outfit that was a whole lot of style. Pairing a plaid button up and cardigan with baggier jeans, sneakers that match his shirt’s color scheme, and just a little “flash” to step it up, Dash’s style is clean and simple without being anywhere near boring.

New Boyz – I have been a huge fan of these boys’ style since I first heard of them. They have been a major part of making the mixing of hipster and hip hop style mainstream and their outfit choices on Saturday were just another prime example of the fearlessness they have when it comes to bringing together so many different style elements! Retro lettermen cardigan, denim vest, beanie, backwards cap, and lots of layers made up their HHA looks…and I get it two-thumbs up!

LACMA’s Star-Studded Gala; The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

Saturday night the Los Angeles County Museum of Art held a star-studded gala entitled “The Unmasking” and it served as the opening of the a new exhibition named after the owners of Fiji Water and Pom Wonderful, Lynda and Stewart Resnick. Many celebrities were in attendance, including the three young ladies I have chosen to do this post on.

The Good:

Kim Kardashian has yet to fail me as of yet with her fashion choices. Ms. Kardashian donned a red, one shoulder Georges Hobeika gown. Complete with elegant hair and make up that accentuated her eyes, but wasn’t over the top, Kim looked stunning and outshone most on the red carpet.

The Bad:

Now I was very conflicted with this category because I wasn’t sure which of the two ladies to put here, but I opted with Nicole Richie…and her hair and make up were the only things keeping her from “The Ugly” spot. A close up of her face left me very pleased; her hairstyle was up, slightly messy but simple in contrast with the busyness of her dress. Also, her choice to pick one feature on her face to play with (her eye make up is amazing!) and keep the rest simple, really upgraded her overall appearance. Nicole Richie is usually spot on when it comes to dressing up or down, but I think (at least on her anyways) this fall 2009 Marchesa gown is a bit MUCH. Perhaps it’s just the giant black ribbon that is awkwardly knotted at her shoulder and waist, but whatever it is there is one thing it is not; working for her!

The Ugly:

Christina, Christina, Christina. This look isn’t essentially bad, but upon further inspection, i.e. seeing a close up on her face, this get up was pushed into “The Ugly” category. The pop diva looks very voluptuous in the pink-toned Atelier Versace gown (which we are all for because she usually looks VERY skinny) but her signature platinum locks styled very wild and curly paired with her overly bronzed face make up and almost invisible eyebrows just were not doing anything for me…except make me frown. She just looks tired and over it.

Madge, Lola, and Momsen Dress to Impress for “Material Girl” Line Launch @ Macy’s Herald Square

Madge Lola Momsen MG launch Madge, Lola, and Momsen Dress to Impress for Material Girl Line Launch @ Macys Herald Square

Last night was the official launch of “Material Girl”, a clothing line designed by Madonna and her daughter Lourdes a.k.a Lola at Macy’s Herald Square location in Manhattan. Also in attendance was the “face” of the line, Taylor Momsen.  All three ladies were dressed in the style of the line – a girly meets rocker-chic look, for the girl that will paint her nails pink right after punching you in the face.

Speaking of being punched in the face, Taylor Momsen’s eyeliner gave the Gossip Girl starlet the look of someone with two black eyes…or a raccoon. Pair her dramatic eye make-up with her signature “maybe I haven’t washed my hair in a few days” blonde locks, over the knee boots and strapless mini dress (both from the “Material Girl” collection), Momsen looked more fitted to be at a “Rock of Love” function then a teen girl clothing line launch.

As a stark contrast, the mother-daughter celebrity design team looked very fashionable; though some might argue Lola’s outfit wasn’t entirely appropriate for a thirteen-year old. Hey, with a momma like Madonna are we really surprised she isn’t he polo and khaki capris type of girl? At least she isn’t dressed like Taylor Momsen.

Steal Her Style: Vanessa Hudgens @ Legend of the Guardians LA Premiere

Certain celebrities only stay on my radar because I love their sense of style and Vanessa Hudgens is one of them. She is always dressed fabulously; never too anything, fresh, on trend, fun and age appropriate. You can tell she has fun with fashion and it shows in the way she carries herself and her outfits. Hudgens showed up at the Los Angeles premiere of “Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’ Hoole” wearing a quintessentially-summer floral frock and looking very much “young LA”.
