Mixing Bold Hues Like Blake

Around here, we know how to appreciate a trend, a bold statement piece – and even a particularly obscure fashion accessory. We’re pretty open minded about most fads that come down the fashion pipeline – and even encourage stylish experimentation. One thing we always advise, though, is keeping a look neutral or monochromatic when trying out an extravagant new piece. Remember that bizarre faux fur vest trend? How about leopard print everything? We loved it all – as long as that one piece was allowed to shine as the star of the ensemble. Mixing too many bold colors or trendy pieces is where stars often go horribly wrong – and too many elements can quickly obscure an otherwise great look.

But recently, at the January 11 National Board of Review Awards Gala, held at posh Cipriani 42nd Street in New York City, “Gossip Girl” princess Blake Lively proved all our past theories wrong. She proudly rocked not one, not two – but three different, and very bold colors – and looked absolutely fantastic. Keep reading to check out the photos and discover why we think this look actually worked.

For starters, keep in mind that Ms. Lively is outspoken about never hiring a stylist and always choosing her own outfits – right down to the hair and makeup – for her red carpet appearances. Sure, she’s had a few fashion mishaps, but overall, we think Blake has great taste. Being besties with Mr. Chanel himself, Karl Lagerfeld probably doesn’t hurt, either. But for the Gala, Blake went with a bold purple Marchesa in luxe suede, deep burgundy t-strap pumps from Burberry (and a manicure to match), and bright, summery turquoise jewelry. This collision of colors and seasons (suede and turquoise?!) might spell disaster on someone else, but on Blake, it’s fashion perfection.

The reason why this look soars is because Blake chose all solid colors. If her Marchesa even had the slightest pattern, it would compete with her bold jewelry. If her heels were complicated, it would have never work. If you love this outfit and want to try a similar color clash, remember to keep all hues in the same range (Blake chose jewel tones here) and to keep each color solid, rather than patterned. Happy mixing!
