Vokal by Nelly
Year launched: 1996
Promoted as an authentic streetwise alternative that “is a brand that sells itself, not a brand that is sold to you”, Nelly teamed with long-time friend Yomi Martin to produce VOKAL, an urban menswear line that would reflect his signature hip-hop fashion stylings. The brand predates Nelly’s breakthrough record debut “Country Grammar” and its tshirts and hats were initially sold “out of the trunk of the car” at nightclubs and events. In 2005, with a new apparel licensing partner, the brand was re-launched at fashion industry show MAGIC with a line of track suits, hats and athletic jerseys with plans for a womenswear line. As of September 2008 the brand is either on hiatus or discontinued.
Cornell Haynes Jr., an American rapper, is better known by his stage name Nelly. He has four solo studio albums released in his name, several number-one hits and won several Grammy Awards in 2003 and 2004. He is also one of the owners of the Charlotte Bobcats, along with Robert L. Johnson and NBA legend Michael Jordan.
