Chloe Sevigny

Indie film darling Chloe Sevigny arrived at the HBO’s Girls series premiere in a dress by Opening Ceremony. According to the HBO site Girls takes “a comic look at the assorted humiliations and rare triumphs of a group of girls in their early 20’s”. The cast is comprised of relatively unknown actresses and premieres April 15th.

I love that Ms. Sevigny takes risks because sometimes it pays off, it’s too bad that this gamble wasn’t a winner. I really want to like the dress because I love prints, but it’s so busy my eyes don’t know where to go – and that HBO backdrop isn’t helping. The busy blue, black, and yellow dress was a mirrored print that reminds me of those Rorschach tests. I just know there’s a subliminal message in there somewhere.

I’m also disappointed by her hair and makeup. I know with a dress that busy you can’t go overboard make-up wise, but her hair is kind of distracting. I wish the dress itself fit her better too – the lumps and bumps are just not flattering.

I respect the Big Love star as an actress and I’m always rooting for her. I think it’s because I associate her with my fond memories of the now-defunct magazine Sassy when she was an effervescent model who suddenly skyrocketed to a huge “it girl”.

Here’s some Sassy pictures of her in quintessential 90’s gear:

Attack of the Nude Back Panel: Vanessa Hudgens

At her Journey 2: The Mysterious Island movie premiere, Vanessa Hudgens wore a canary yellow “Helga” gown by Maria Lucia Hohan. It was a strapless, beautifully draped, wispy affair with a lovely sweeping train. The gorgeously saturated buttery yellow hue gave her skin a glowing boost.

When I first saw the gown, I thought it was suitably feminine and chic. Unfortunately, I couldn’t get over the fact that the illusion of a backless dress was really a nude sheer panel. The back looked too much like control top hosiery. From the side view of the dress, it looked like the High School Musical star was holding up one dress (like you do in front of a mirror when you want to get an idea of how something looks without actually trying it on) while the sheer fabric held it in place. This kind of nude sheer fabric is supposed to give you impression that it’s not really there. However, it inevitably wrinkles and bunches – which either gives it away or makes it look like your skin has weird creases.

The dress is charming, as long as you limit your view to strictly head on or from a distance – where it’s harder to discern the ice skater fabric that makes up the back support. When I first saw Vanessa in her gown, my thought process was – “Oh, that’s pretty and flowy. Hmm…wait a sec…why is…is that…oh, no…why?!”

On the plus side, I love her true happiness to be there – it makes her look radiant. You can tell she loves the dress by being unable to resist having some fun playing with the beautiful ethereal fabric.

Earlier this month, Katherine Heigl wore a taupe version of this backless dress with shoulder straps. The fabric looked beautifully wrapped on her torso. The straps helped cover up the beige back panel, but I think her cleavage looks a little suffocated. I think Vanessa wore the dress better because of the delicious color and also her décolletage doesn’t look uncomfortably bound up.

What do you think? Can you overlook the back panel and just enjoy the look based on the beautifully rich honey color and her joyful smile? Or does the L’eggs nude hosiery panel give you the heebie-jeebies?

Golden Globes 2012: Beige Edition

As with any celebrity award event you have the drop dead beautifully dressed and the unfortunately dressed. This is list of the latter from this year’s Golden Globe Awards, and I blame the nude hue or what some call the “non-color” for washing out these otherwise gorgeous celebrities. It also brings back memories from back in the day when crayolas came with a “flesh” colored crayon, it was my most loathed color (it reminds me of band-aids).

Maybe it’s a new trend for celebrities to try to detract attention from themselves and this neutral color helps them disappear into the background. Sadly, this trend seemed to attach itself to some favored celebrities.

Heidi Klum, although, the necklace helps break up the boring expanse of beige:

If you want to see how vivacious a brilliant color can add, just take a look at the exquisite Dame Helen Mirren in royal blue:

Julianne Moore’s Outfit Can’t Make Up Its Mind

Julianne Moore Lanvin Julianne Moores Outfit Cant Make Up Its Mind

Last night at the London premiere of her new movie The Kids Are Alright, Julianne Moore wore a questionable dress. The Lanvin get up she donned looks like she is wearing one dress with robe sort of thing wore on one side of her body and kept on with a middle belt. She completed the look with a cute Bulgari clutch and ankle-cuffed black heels. I think I like the outfit as a whole, but the more I stare at the dress, the more unusual it gets in my eyes. Therefore, I am labeling it as “bad”.

What do you think of Julianne’s “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” ensemble?

Helena Bonham Carter @ The King’s Speech Photocall

While I am a huge fan of Helena Bonham Carter’s acting and her quirky personality that translates into her eccentric fashion sense, the look she donned at The King’s Speech movie promotion photocall just makes me go “ehh”.  I was very tempted to dub this look as “ugly” but I like the boots and factored in Bonham Carter’s usual kitsch so I decided that the outfit was just a “bad” choice on her part.

I think that if the skirt was a bit shorter, maybe if it hit just above the knee, it would have done it some justice. I think Helena just got lost somewhere in the fabric and I find it unfortunate.
