“Notorious”-ly COOGI

Seen “Notorious” the movie yet? It’s a must-see. A tribute to the great Notorious BIG:  a classic from Biggie “Big Poppa”.  Enjoy!

Biggie spit “I stay Coogi down to the socks”, and he did. The legendary rapper formed a tight association with the COOGI clothing brand.  In Big’s biopic, “Notorious”, the cast, true to reality, also rocked COOGI swags.

How did that all go down? Before Biggie Smalls aka Christopher Wallace changed the game, COOGI was only known as a “Cosby Sweater” given Bill Cosby’s penchant for wearing them on the #1 tv show at the time, The Cosby Show.

According to stylist Groovey Lew, a “flashy kid from Mount Vernon, named Walt G” who wore COOGI, influenced Big’s fashion sense.

“We used to go to [Manhattan club] the Grand on Sundays, and my man had all the Coogis and the Kangols.  And I got the pictures where G got his Kangol on and his Coogi, but Big had on Army jackets and Timberlands.  So [Big] fell in love with this kid’s style right there – just took it to the next level for the world to see.  If you weren’t Bill Cosby or just a rich mother from Australia, playing golf, nobody knew about [Coogi].  Big homie started running around with it, and that’s what opened the ‘hood up to it.”

Here a couple from this season’s  COOGI collection. First up is the tribute COOGI t-shirt:

COOGI was founded in 1969 by Jacky Taranto, in Melbourne, Australia.  In the 1990’s, the brand was made popular by Notorious B.I.G., who consistently rocked COOGI sweaters everywhere he goes.  The boom of COOGI’s urban vibe reached its peak when Biggie released “Big Poppa”.
