After a long wait of something that we thought would never happen, Jean Paul Gaultier finally spoke about his tribute couture collection that’s inspired by late British singer, Amy Winehouse. Gaultier told VogueTV:
“I was surprised when she died that no one in fashion made an homage to her. Her look was fabulous, fantastic – it was unique. Usually, actresses and singers need fashion advice. She naturally had the right make-up, the right earrings – it was a truly a style. She didn’t just pick up one part of that look. And I love her voice, I love everything about her.”
Earlier this year, Amy Winehouse’s father, Mitch, commented about Gaultier’s tribute to his daughter’s style and said it was an “insult” to Amy. He said in a statement:
“The family was upset to see those pictures, they were a total shock. We’re still grieving for her loss, and we’ve had a difficult week with the six-month anniversary of Amy’s death. To see her image lifted wholesale to sell clothes was a wrench we were not expecting or consulted on. We’re proud of her influence on fashion but find black veils on models, smoking cigarettes with a barbershop quartet singing her music in bad taste. It portrays a view of Amy when she was not at her best, and glamorises some of the more upsetting times in her life. That’s upsetting for her family.”
Reports say that the couture collection shown by Gaultier won’t be retailed but to be made by order for very few clients. However, Mitch Winehouse demanded that a donation should have been made in Amy Winehouse’s name. He told British tabloid “The Sun”:
“No one asked us for permission or offered to make a donation to the foundation. This is purely about Gaultier making money, and that’s wrong.”
Do you think Jean-Paul Gaultier did the right thing or are you taking the Winehouse family’s side?
