With the holidays on the horizon, you’re probably being barraged with invites for holiday cocktail parties, New Year’s Eve dessert soires and reunions of old friends in your hometown while everyone is visiting family. Deciding what to wear and how to accessorize each holiday event is always stressful – especially for those of us stylistas who always want to look our best.
Sometimes, that black cocktail dress – albeit timeless and classic – is plain old boring when we’re reaching for it for the fifth time of the season. Fortunately, Michael Kors – favorite designer of starlets like Katie Holmes and Nicole Kidman, and Project Runway judge – recently revealed his top tricks for keeping holiday looks festive and fun. Follow his simple rules to keep things fresh – no matter how many times you need to slip on those same black slingbacks.

Kors recently spilled his holiday style secrets to Glamour Magazine – and his best advice? Swap your Little Black Dress for a festive red one. The color is universally flattering – even on redheads – and perfect for the season. The only potential pitfall is accidentally “looking like Santa’s helper,” so keep shoes and accessories neutral in nude or black and let your dress shine.

Kors’ other favorite holiday style tip for 2010 is to try a new casual sequined piece. Sequins and sparkle have a nagging tendency to scream “beauty pageant!” – but not if you choose the right pieces. This season, there are plenty of casual, loose-fitting tanks and blazers bedazzled with sequins ranging in shades from jewel tones to bright silver and gold. Just remember to pair your blingy pieces with matte fabrics like velvet or jersey to “keep from blinding people,” according to Kors.
This holiday season, as you’re rummaging through your closet contemplating which of several black cocktail dresses to wear again, and feeling bored with your wardrobe, take a step back, a deep breath and remember these creative new tricks from everyone’s favorite style guru!

I've read a few articles this week about black being good for the season. It does seem to be the flavor of the month.
