At the New York Premier for Black Swan, the Darren Aronofsky film about the secret world of professional ballet, star Winona Ryder appeared in a decidedly androgynous ensemble. Her monochromatic black suit is from Givenchy by Riccardo Tisci. (Other celebs that have hit the red carpet in Givenchy by Riccardo Tisci include French model and actress Laetitia Marie Laure Casta and actor Stefano Accors. Madonna also wore a custom piece from Givenchy by Riccardo Tisci during her Sticky & Sweet Tour.)
Ryder has taken some tabloid heat for appearing in this suit. Instead of donning a fashion-forward frock or a sumptuous column of fabric to show off, respectively, style or curves, Ryder made quite the splash by not showing off any skin. Other than her face, hair, and hands, she was entirely covered in black, black, and more black. The only exception being the glittering jewelry that she wore in place of a tie.
The main criticism of Ryder’s outfit, it seems, is that it seemed to be a bit oversized for the actress. But there are also criticisms, of course, that she looked rather mannish next to her co-stars Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis. Portman also wore all black, but appeared in a dress that thoroughly revealed her shoulders and emphasized her bust line. Kunis also played the monochromatic game in a cream colored dress with a slit that showed off her legs and design details that highlighted her waist and decolletage.
There is a vocal minority that is praising Ryder’s suit, declaring that the cut of the suit is hardly a mistake but, rather, a style victory for both the actress and Riccardo Tisci. In fact, a close look at a number of photos from the premier indicate that the suit fit Ryder perfectly. Take, for example, the cuff line of the pants and the shape of the shoulders.
