We’re so used to seeing fashionista Blake Lively channel her inner blonde Barbie doll, that we almost didn’t recognize her at the April 26th Time 100 Gala in New York City. The Gossip Girl star arrived on the red carpet in a jaw-droppingly beautiful sea foam green gown from Zuhair Murad’s Spring 2011 Couture Collection, which we’ll discuss in just a moment. But the biggest shock of the evening was Blake’s head-to-toe transformation, complete with a totally unexpected hair color change. Read on for photos of the new redheaded beauty – and discover how to maintain a similar hair hue at home!

Before we address Blake’s new to-die-for strawberry shade, we need to drool over her couture gown for a minute. Everything from the cut, to the color to the gorgeous bustline embellishments is perfection on Blake’s flawless figure. In fact, she couldn’t have picked a better color to compliment her new red hair. If you’re considering a walk on the fiery side of hair color, keep in mind that you may have to change your makeup and wardrobe staples, as well. Blake’s Zuhair Murad design is the perfect blend of deep teal and aqua blue – and a marine-inspired color palate works great with red hair. Why do you think Disney’s Ariel was a ginger? The color combination is perfect, of course!

But as beautiful as Blake looks, maintaining red hair color at home can be tricky. Blake most likely has a team of beauty pros on speed dial – but for us laywomen, keeping the look fresh requires a bit more effort. Going red is best left to the pros, so visit your favorite salon for your initial color service. After a colorist helps you achieve your desired shade, proper maintenance is important if you want your color to last. Limit shampoos to only two or three times per week, and use dry shampoo in between washes. Carefully read labels of your styling products to ensure they’re color safe, and stick to alcohol-free formulations, which can strip away hair color. Follow these simple steps and you can debut your Blake-approved hair hue in no time!
