Sophia Bush in Horizontal Stripes

Around here, we’re all about fashion rules. Some of our steadfast laws include balancing a silhouette, dressing appropriately for any given event and never wearing white to a wedding, unless you’re the blushing bride. But as much as we love keeping our fellow fashionistas in line, some of our favorite Hollywood celebrities continue to prove that some of our rules were, in fact, made to be broken. At the glamorous ELLE Women in Music event, held at The Music Box at the Henry Fonda Theatre in Hollywood, CW sweetheart Sophia Bush arrived looking fierce and fabulous in horizontal stripes! And yes, there are a few specific tricks for successfully pulling off this notoriously tricky look – and we’ve listed our top tips below!

Sophia, whose smash hit One Tree Hill returns to the tween-favorite network for its eighth season this spring, opted for an amazingly rich navy metallic minidress from the Chris Benz Fall 2010 runway. Even though the pretty frock was rife with horizontal stripes from neckline to hem, Sophia looked totally svelte – and knocked the socks off that age-old fashion rule about the monoclinal pattern. But before we can address why this dress is such a flattering cut on Sophia despite the stripes, we need to discuss the drool-worthy blue hue. Somewhere between royal and navy, this vibrant and rich metallic is a totally fresh take on the trend, even though this design is from Fall 2010. For Summer 2011, look for similar colored metallics, and mix them with brights (like Sophia’s to-die-for hot pink Alexander McQueen pumps) or black to anchor a similar shade.

Sophia’s perfectly toned legs are what save this look from becoming frumpy. If she had opted to wear the Chris Benz design in its original runway shin-length, it might have veered into some unflattering territory. When choosing a tricky pattern, it’s important to allow your favorite body part to be your best accessory. Even though Sophia’s dress is striped, it’s impossible to look thick or frumpy when she’s got legs for miles. We also love the way she accessorized, with a minty Judith Leiber clutch and glitzy Neil Lane baubles.
