Hugh Hefner has been in the news recently because of his engagement to 24 year old blonde beauty Crystal Harris. But he has always been known for his unique style, namely his signature pajamas and smoking jacket. If you can believe it, fashionistas are taking a cue from Hugh this spring and wearing long, languid, pajama-inspired duds. We’ve all spotted the fashionable lady walking her dog at five or six in the morning. She may be wearing a fabulous coat and hiding behind sunglasses with lenses the size of salad plates, but underneath? Well, underneath we see flashes of floral nighties and pinstriped sleepwear.
This look has been given a whole new twist. Instead of being relegated to the category of shameful, hastily-assembled predawn ensembles, it is now chic and luxurious. We’re seeing satin, cropped pants with wide legs, waists that are cinched with either elastic or drawstring. And that’s just the bottoms. There are also pajama-inspired dresses and skirts. Tops, of course, are marked by thin shoulder straps or racerback tops. Want to see some examples? Check out the Spring 2011 lines from Michael Kors, Walter Thakoon, Anthropologie, Vena Cava, and Burberry.

Of course, the fabrications of these garments are different from true sleepwear. We’re not saying that you can do all of your spring shopping in the lingerie and pajama department. (But there is a chance that you may be able to repurpose just a few items that you normally only wear to bed.) Rather, the classic silhouettes and fabrics that are used in nightgowns and other common sleeping costumes are being used to inspire a breezy, luxurious look for the spring. Just be sure not to overdo this trend. Otherwise, you may walk into an important meeting looking like you just rolled out of bed, and that’s never a good thing, no matter what’s showing up on the glossiest of fashion magazine editorial pages.
