In our obsession with “of-the-minute” fashion designers and models, it’s no surprise that few women are actually able to build enduring careers in the industry. We see runway models disappear after only a few seasons, and stylish reality programs like “Project Runway” and “The Fashion Show” churn out flash-in-the-pan clothing designers like a Ford assembly line. Because of the sheer nature of the fashion world, models who have made lifelong careers for themselves always bring a fresh perspective on style. Recently, timeless beauty Lauren Hutton dished her best fashion and beauty tips to J.Crew’s online magazine – and her favorite nuggets of advice may surprise you.
The 67-year-old, still-working, model brings a certain fashion IQ to the table that only comes with an ingrained knowledge of the industry. She made her acting debut in the 1960s with “Paper Lion” and has since had steady acting and modeling gigs. She’s also developed a namesake line of skin care and cosmetics specifically formulated for mature women, which the Home Shopping Network can’t keep in stock.
Throughout the J. Crew feature, Hutton dons everything from preppy, nautical stripes to sparkly track pants with equal grace and sophistication. Certainly, this is a woman whose fashion advice is coveted for good reason! Her favorite tip? She says, “It’s better to look as if you’ve just thrown something on rather than prissed everything up. I like when things are slightly off-kilter, asymmetrical and a little messed up.” That explains why she always looks so effortlessly chic! Take her advice tomorrow morning, before fussing with your ironing board – and try a more relaxed look.
Even though Hutton always looks flawless from head to toe, and has enjoyed a wildly successful career in fashion, she’s quick to admit she’s not always perfect. She claims we are all allowed a few unstylish missteps and says, “Developing your very best personal style – and that includes figuring out what works for your body type – involves a lot of trial and error.” So, don’t forget to take a few periodic risks, and always look as fresh as Hutton herself!
