We’ve got to be honest here. On anyone else – and we do mean anyone – Hailee Steinfeld’s neon horizontal striped Prada gown at the Screen Actors Guild Awards would have been an absolute fashion disaster. Every element of the brightly colored gown adds up to a garish and unflattering frock on an otherwise beautiful figure. But with a little style magic, the adorable 14-year-old “True Grit” actress looked fantastic, fashionable, and age appropriate, while simultaneously landing on our future high-fashion radar. We’ll certainly be on the lookout for what this girl-on-the-rise chooses to wear at the upcoming Academy Awards, where her critically acclaimed film is nominated for Best Picture. Aside from being genetically blessed, thanks to her mixed Filipino, African American and European heritage, Hailee also happens to stand tall at five feet, seven inches. Her enviable statuesque height makes it easy for her to pull off bold looks that we lay people can only dream about. Her youth also gives her a lot of fashion leeway in terms on bold colors and cuts, which basically makes her the only starlet on the planet that could look so perfect in Prada’s neon, horizontal stripes. And we’re thrilled she chose to take a fashion risk, because now we can use her look for great fashion inspiration as the weather heats up.
For the show, Hailee let her gown shine by opting for loose, casual waves and a bare neck. Any necklace might have competed with her fierce Prada frock, subtracting from the gown’s artistry. The only jewelry the young star chose was a matching bright pink ring and a coordinating manicure, which was the perfect compliment and nod to her youth.
Neon colors are going to be huge for Spring 2011, and although we all can’t have Hailee’s body or poise, we can certainly try out her candy-colored fingertips. If you need a splash of summer color in an otherwise dreary winter, reach for a bold nail lacquer in a Hailee-approved shade of bright pink or juicy orange, and you’ll be star stylish in no time!
