Uh oh! There are some wardrobe rules that even the most daring fashionistas never break. Many of the most stylish, fashion forward women, for example, wouldn’t be caught dead matching super casual tops (cotton hoodies, oversized t-shirts) with dressy bottoms such as tuxedo pants and full skirts. Others still follow rules about separating black and navy blue. And there is one cardinal fashion rule that is widely accepted throughout the world of fashionable people: Thou shalt not wear socks with sandals.
Well, Vanessa Hudgens just stomped all over that rule. Literally! Last week the actress attended a Nylon Magazine party wearing a cream colored baby doll dress and cardigan with a pair of black sheer ankle socks under strappy black sandals. Now, if Vanessa was the first to try out this look, we might reconsider our general sense that this young lady has great style. However, some of the fashion greats have been pushing this look and making us rethink the longstanding dearly held rule about sandals and socks. Recent runway looks from both Christian Dior and Burberry included this socks and sandals combination.

If you want to try out this look, there are some very important rules to follow. First of all, this look is intended only for chic shoes and delicate socks. We are not, in any way shape or form, telling you to bust out your gym socks and Birkenstocks. That combinations would land you on the worst dressed list within the blink of an eye. When choosing socks to pair with sandals, search for socks that have a texture that is similar to panty hose. (After all, it has been acceptable for some time to wear panty hose with peek toe pumps.) Speaking of peek toe pumps, this look is most commonly (and successfully) worn with sandals that show limited amounts of toe.

Great overview, indeed!
