One of our favorite Summer 2011 trends is the floral maxi dress, and we’ve been thrilled that some of our favorite celebrities have been rocking the look for weeks already. There’s something amazingly easy about a simple frock that can take you directly from the beach to cocktail hour with a few tiny tweaks. Luckily, Zoe Saldana arrived in Cannes on Monday, May 16th, just in time for the premiere screening of Tree of Life, and donned a great example of a perfectly dressed-up maxi. Her black and white version comes courtesy of Vionnet, but we’re certain we can all find very similar budget-friendly versions. Keep reading to learn how you can create an effortless look for evening, just like Zoe!

The Avatar actress is super petite, so she’s a great example of how flattering long frocks can be on a wide range of body types. You don’t need to be statuesque to wear a floor-length summer dress, and the details of Zoe’s pick are super flattering. Of course the black and white color palate is completely timeless, so look for simple dresses if you’re petite. Be careful not to overload your look with bold patterns and several different hues, and let the dramatic long length take center stage. Zoe’s floral design and tiny pop of color, thanks to her striped belt, hit all the right notes of a perfect maxi dress look.

If you’re lucky enough to already own a similar style, but are wondering how to make it work for evening, take a cue from Zoe’s hair and makeup. To amp up a frothy floral dress for an evening event like dinner and drinks, all you need are a few simple tools and tips. For Zoe’s effortless updo, skip your daily shampoo and tease the crown of your hair with a fine-tooth comb. Once you’ve achieved your desired volume, gather your hair into a low ponytail at the nape of your neck and twist into a ballerina bun. Secure your style with plenty of bobby pins (in a similar hue to your own locks) and let any front pieces naturally frame your face. Mist your whole style with a flexible hold hairspray, and finish your beachy look with a matte burgundy lip color for a Zoe-inspired look!
