When Pharrell Williams goes bionic, he doesn’t mean getting a new bionic arm or leg.  It actually means he cares for the environment.

Pharrell teams up with folks at Bionic Yarn, a two year-old textile firm based in New York dedicated to developing environmentally sustainable fabrics.  In this new role, Pharrell is both owner and investor in the company, and also as an ambassador and spokesman for the brand.

What exactly Bionic Yarn produces?  Well they engineer, market and manufacture premium yarns and fabrics using fibers comprised of recycled plastic bottles.  They fabrics then can be used to make backpacks, luggage, handbags and all sorts of clothing items, as well as home furnishings.

Pharrell’s statement on the collaboration:

“I’m so interested in the technology behind this.  I’m also very concerned about the environment and want to make a conscious effort to make it better.”

He’s also working with his partner, Tyson Toussant, to develop textiles.

Pharrell is also amazed at the fabrics of Bionic Yarn, “We were just looking at this new canvas that is amazing.  Basically, the denim is still denim, the cotton is still cotton.  The process to make the Bionic Yarn makes it extremely durable and gives it a really luxurious feel.  When Nmy partners at BBC/Ice Cream felt the Bionic Yarn cotton, they couldn’t believe how smooth it feels.”

Bionic Yarn’s mission is to preserve and protect the environment by creating these high-performance recycled fabrics to be used in creating everydayitems.  Did you know that an average pair of jeans made of the fabric contains seven recycled plastic beverage bottles?  Imagine how many plastic landfills are reduced if all the celebrity designers are starting to use these kinds of stuff in their creations?

If you’re interested in sampling how these fabrics feel against your skin, why don’t you visit the Billionaire Boys Club / Ice Cream website, shop for their cool items, see for yourself and get Pharrell’s swag!
