Though she was born to a well-off family in Pennsylvania, she had to work her way up the ladder like many of us. That included working for Vera Wang and Harper’s Bazaar.

It was late 2003 when Tory Burch started having ideas about building a fashion business. Her theme was: elegant but affordable.

With pure talent and with her ex-husband Chris’ help, Tory Burch began to build her brand in their apartment while raising six kids, including three from Chris’ previous marriage. That entailed her to work on her first designs literally from home.

You could say Tory was cooking up design ideas all the time as she was working in the kitchen. When more funds became available, she was able to open her first store in Manhattan in 2004. The rest is breathtaking fashion history.

Tory Burch’s is one of those what we call accidental super success stories. Though she always knew what she was up to, she really didn’t expect her business would grow into the $2 billion empire that it is now.

Stuff of dreams. Known for Bohemian-chic styles, Tory Burch has become undoubtedly one of the most well-known brands in women’s fashion today, and has dozens of stores around the world. Her name doesn’t only stand for the person anymore but the brand.

And interestingly, she started all these in the comfort of her apartment kitchen.
